 Research/Creative Activities

·      Collaborated with Dr. Jack Rhoton of the Center of Excellence in Mathematics Science Education in a year long effort to align state and national math and science standards, integrate math and science curriculum, develop and identify available resources, and strengthen my own teaching in those areas, 2006-2007.

·      Ongoing work with Dr. Lester Laminack and the US elementary team to strengthen our technical writing program in alliance with our new focus as a Math/Science signature school.

·      Action Research Project 2006-2007:  I analyzed student spelling skills and developed a program to provide targeted teaching of dependable spelling patterns.  I was able to broaden my project and blend it with my preference to individualize spelling instruction for first graders.  The result is a balanced approach to spelling instruction that systematically targets common patterns and still meets the developmental needs of individual children.

·     Presented Writing Across the Curriculum in a Kindergarten and a First Grade Classroom, at ETSU Early Childhood Conference, July 2008

Presented Teaching Constructively and Meeting Standards in a Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade Classroom and Busy Bee Book Club:  An Authentic Reading/Writing Workshop Approach in the PreK Classroom at ETSU Early Childhood Conference, June 2007.

·        Presented Following in the Footsteps of Oprah:  Young Children Get Their Own Book Club at the National Association for the Education of Young Children annual national conference in Chicago, November 2007.

·     Presented Revisioning University School: A Signature School in Science and Math at the National Science Teachers Association national conference in Boston, March 2008.

·     Presented inservice training to Union County (TN) PreK teachers, October 5, 2007.

Presented the inservice workshop Literacy, Language, and Early Learners to teachers and staff of Greeneville City Schools and Greene County Schools.  November 2006

·        Chaired Foreign Language Committee to research pedagogy, methodology, and logistics of setting up a K-8 Foreign Language program.
