Welcome Fifth Graders and Families!
I am so excited about the learning opportunities and experiences that await you this year at University School! I know that you will be challenged to grow academically, socially, and emotionally and I am thankful that I get to be there to support and guide you through all of these changes.
Since we are going to be working together this year (both students and parents), I assume you would like to know a little more about me. My name is Jill Janaitis (Jan-eye-tiss) and this will be my fifth year at University School. I came by way of Georgia where I was a teacher in the Douglas County School System (just west of the city of Atlanta). I have my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree in Instructional Leadership. Additionally, I have my gifted education endorsement. I love my job and I continuously try improving myself as an educator. I enjoy teaching all subjects, but I must admit that I am passionate about Math education. I believe that, with work, all students can (and will) be successful in mathematics regardless of their gender, previous experiences, or parents' mathematic prowess.
Outside of school, I love to perform in musical theatre, shop, scrapbook, and quilt. You might say that I enjoy having a creative outlet (which is one reason I love being a teacher)!! I spend most of my time with my wonderful husband, Jim, and my furry children; my two adorable toy poodles, Leonidas and Athena.
I cannot stress enough the importance of the home-school communication connection. E-mail is always the fastest way to communicate with me, but if there is an issue that you would like to discuss in person I am happy to set up a time for you to come in. We have been encouraged to remind you to refrain from coming in during dismissal time and trying to have a mini-conference in the hallway. I need to stay focused on the tasks of keeping the children safe and getting them into the correct vehicle during such a chaotic time. If you would wait until 3:15 I will be able to give you the personal attention that you desire.
Please read through this newsletter to find out more information on how we all can make this year go smoothly and be the most successful yet! Students, buckle up! You've got a wild ! You’ve got a wild ride ahead of you!
