The Department of Housing and Residence Life (DHRL) at East Tennessee State University offers graduate assistant positions that provide knowledge and experience applicable to many different professions. Graduate Assistants are classified as Resident Directors (RDs).
The RD is a live-in position with a contract of one academic year or one summer term. RDs report directly to the Area Coordinator (AC) assigned to their area and assist the AC and DHRL in establishing and maintaining a supportive atmosphere conducive to the personal development and growth of residents and staff. RDs work together and with the DHRL in establishing and maintaining a supportive atmosphere conducive to the personal development and growth of residents and staff.
General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Managing a residence hall or apartment facility
Supervising and training staff
Providing programming for residents
Providing crisis management, informal counseling, and referring residents
Advising Hall Council
Enforcing policies and procedures
Attending weekly meetings with DHRL and respective Area Coordinator
Maintaining open communication lines with the DHRL
RDs receive a Graduate Assistantship which provides a monthly stipend approximately $667) and a tuition waiver for nine semester hours for the fall and spring.

Job Qualifications:

Must possess an earned Bachelor’s Degree and be admitted to a graduate program at East Tennessee State University. Previous experience in residence life is preferred but not necessary. Knowledge of residential living-learning philosophy; interpersonal communication, and organizational skills are necessary to lead and direct both student and staff development; ability to interact with a diverse student population; other qualifications include the ability to organize tasks, prioritize duties, and effectively complete the various components of the RD position.
An RD is expected to be enrolled as a full-time graduate student and making satisfactory progress toward a degree while in the position. Full-time enrollment is defined as a minimum of 9 credit hours per semester. Good standing with University and a 3.0 GPA must be maintained.

Job Requirements:

RDs are required to live on campus due to the nature of the position and are provided a furnished living facility with all utilities except long distance calls. They must adhere to University policies and procedures as stated in the Residence Hall Student Handbook and Residence Hall Staff Handbook. Living facilities are for the staff member and spouse/children only (marriages must be recognized as legal in the State of Tennessee). Any exceptions would have to be approved by the Director of Housing and Residence Life. RDs are expected to reside in their assigned unit while employed and to maintain presence in the assigned apartment overnight during the week and weekends, except during approved time off.
RDs may not have other employment during the academic year, and with permission only during the summer.
