Award: All school expenses
(including tuition, room, board, and fees), a living allowance
(of approximately £1,000 a month), and transportation costs to
and from Oxford at the start and conclusion of the program. The
scholarship normally lasts two years, but one and three year
scholarships are possible under certain circumstances.
Eligibility: Applicants must be US
citizens and hold a bachelor's degree before study under the
scholarship is to begin.
When to Apply:
Applications are usually due to the faculty representative by
early September.
The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest extant
international exchange program. Created at the bequest of Cecil
Rhodes, mining magnate and British colonialist for whom Rhodesia
was named, the purpose of the scholarship was to support
students of countries that were currently or formerly British
colonies to study at (arguably) the premiere school in England,
Oxford University. Each year, 32 American recipients join over
50 more from around the globe in undertaking either an
additional Bachelor's or a graduate degree. The criteria for
evaluation of applicants, as laid out in Mr. Rhodes' will, are
fourfold - successful applicants should evidence academic
distinction, aptitude of leadership, great physical vigor (on
the sports field and/or off), and a strong moral character that
desires to better humanity. While these characteristics are
variably interpreted, all applicants should evidence excellence
of body and mind, in the classroom and outside of it.
All students chosen as a finalist on the regional level
will
be asked to take part in an interview (most likely in
late November).
