In 1985, the US Congress established the Barry M. Goldwater
Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program in order to
encourage outstanding students to pursue careers as scientists,
mathematicians, and engineers. Each year, the Program grants up
to 300 scholarships to highly qualified individuals so they may
continue their study of engineering, mathematics, or the natural
sciences. Applicants must not only show evidence of academic
excellence, but also demonstrate a commitment to their chosen
field and be able to clearly articulate their future career
plans and their potential to make a significant contribution to
this field.
