Board Meeting Minutes

August 27, 2002

Board Members present: Jay L. Allen, Jean S. Copeland, Joan C. Dressel, Bill Fisher, Barbara R. Humphrys, Harold K. Johnson, Bill Miller, Betty Moore, Harry Powell, Betty Tester, and Charles Votaw, and Keith Turkett.

Ms. Betty Moore, in the absence of Dr. Dorman Stout, called the meeting to order at 3:30 p.m.

The minutes of the July 30, 2002 meeting were approved as distributed by a motion of Dr. Jay L. Allen and a second by Dr. Keith Turkett.

Ms. Moore called for committee reports.

EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: Dr. Dorman Stout, Chair

No report. 

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Dr. Barbara Humphrys, Chair

Dr. Humphrys reported we have currently 296 paid members.  In her conversation with Dr. Stout, he suggested in a quest to increase the membership to a minimum of 300 members this year that the board might want to invite some prospective members as guests to the “Eat & Chat” gathering at Shoney’s on September 19, 2002.  Comments from board members were favorable to this suggestion.

Dr. Humphrys made a motion to invite up to six prospective members for the “Eat & Chat” on September 29, 2002.  This motion was seconded by Joan Dressel and approved by the board.

Since there was some displeasure with the limited space at Shoney’s for “Eat & Chat,” it was suggested that we might want to consider a different location for next year.  Dr. Keith Turkett agreed to check with Howard Johnson Plaza about their facility.

FINANCE COMMITTEE: Ms. Betty Tester, Chair

Ms. Tester distributed the Financial Report which showed an Operating Fund of $2,616.34; Life Membership Account of $10,700; Scholarship Endowment Investment Account of $53,941.61; and Endowment Interest Income Account of $1,837.09.

PROGRAM COMMITTEE: Ms. Betty Moore, Chair

Ms. Moore reported that the annual picnic on June 13, 2002 was very successful.  She noted there were 77 reservations which was less than last year’s attendance; however, attendance varies from year to year.  She also said there were many favorable comments about the musical presentation.

She encouraged attendance at the “Eat & Chat” on September 19, 2002 noting that brunch was at 10:30 a.m., lunch at 11 a.m., and a short business session at 11:30 a.m.

She also called attention to the annual meeting scheduled for Friday, October 18, 2002.

COMMUNICATION COMMITTEE: Dr. Harry Powell, Chair

Dr. Powell reported his committee is in the process of getting reminders out for the “Eat & Chat” gathering.

LIAISON COMMITTEE: Dr. Bill Fisher, Chair

Dr. Fisher shared the following three handouts with the board: 

1.         Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
2.         Inflation Performance Comparison Data
3.         Proposed Tennessee ORP Changes July 1, 2002

(These handouts are on file in Diana McClay’s office.)

Dr. Fisher also encouraged attendance at the Sixth Annual Tri-Cities Regional Medicare Workshop on Monday, September 16, 2002. 

            SERVICE COMMITTEE:  Dr. A. Keith Turkett, Chair

Dr. Turkett reported he had created an activities document for use by Dr. Bach and Dr. Andrews as they gather work assignments. 

OTHER BUSINESS:

Ms. Moore reported that Dr. Stout had appointed a Nominating Committee composed of Dr. Jay Allen, Chairman; Joan Dressel; and Dr. Charles Votaw.

Joan Dressel called attention to the ETSU Accent publication she had just received noting that this publication carries the first in a series of “Tales of the University.”

The meeting adjourned at 4:25 p.m.  The next board meeting will be September 24, 2002.
