A native of Franklin,
Tennessee, Dr. John Mark King (Ph.D.,
University of
Tennessee-Knoxville, 1995) joined the
East Tennessee State University Department of Communication faculty
in 1999 after teaching at Pittsburg
(Kansas) State University (1992-1995) and
Louisiana State University-Baton
Rouge (1995-1999).
He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in public relations and mass communications and serves as faculty adviser for the ETSU Public Relations Student Society of America chapter and administrator for the Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Dr. King has more than 15 years of public relations and media experience and has published 27 refereed research articles in the Southwestern Journal of Mass Communication, Equid Novi: Journal for Journalism in Southern Africa, the Business Research Yearbook, the International Business & Ecology Research Yearbook and other scholarly publications. He has also presented 30 original research papers at regional, national and international conferences. In June 2004, Dr. King represented the Tri-Cities Tennessee/Virginia Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America at the PRSA National Leadership Rally in New York City. He also represented the ETSU Department of Communication at the 2005 Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication National Convention in San Antonio Texas, in August. AEJMC is our accrediting body. The ETSU Department of Communication is one of only 107 accredited Journalism and Mass Communications units in the United States. Dr. King traveled to Chicago to attend a meeting of the Accrediting Council on Journalism and Mass Communication Education in September, 2005. King served as a national assembly delegate at the Public Relations Society of America International Convention in New York in October 2004. He presented three original research papers at the International Academy of Business Disciplines National Conference in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in April 2005. Dr. King presented an original research paper, co-authored with Dr. Andy Lynch, at the International Conference on Social Sciences in Honolulu, Hawaii in June 2005. In September/October 2005, Dr. King traveled to the the United Arab Emirates (next to Saudi Arabia) to serve on a re-accreditation team to evaluate a translation and communication program at Ajman University of Science and Technology. He was an invited guest of the Ministry of Education and the Commission for Accreditation in the UAE. He also spent one day in Amsterdam, Netherlands on the way back to the U.S. He represented the Tri-Cities PRSA Chapter at the 2005 PRSA National Assembly in Chicago in Dec. 2005. During the spring 2006 semester, Dr. King's scholarly travels will take him far afield once again. He will travel to Atlanta with several ETSU PR students to participate in the Real World PR Conference, sponsored by the Georgia PRSA Chapter in February. He will present a research paper and lead a panel session at the International Academy of Business Disciplines International Conference in San Diego, California in April. He will travel to New York City to serve as a judge in the Public Relations Student Society of America Bateman Competition, a national competition for PR students in the U.S. He will present a research paper at an international mass media conference in Athens, Greece in May. |
