I am Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Mathematics at East Tennessee State University
I direct an REU (Research Experiences for Undergraduates) Program here during the summer. The 2003 topic was "Discrete Random Structures," and NSF will support the program through the summer of 2004. Working with 8 - 10 bright math majors each summer is surely the defining part of my calendar year; the summer REU months are the most fun of the year - I get loads of research done, and I can be as irreverent and idiosyncratic as I wish. The REU site is certainly worth a visit!!!
This year, I am or will be teaching MATH 4340 (Combinatorics); MATH 1090 (Freshman Seminar in Quantitative Biology) and MATH 1530 Probability and Statistics, a course that is in the throes of exciting change.
This is my fourth year as Department Chair. See my Letter from the Chair for a review of some of the happenings in the department.
My research interests include strong limit theorems of probability (i.e. almost sure limit theorems on the real line and in Banach spaces), applied probability (Poisson approximation, reliability, nucleotide sequence analysis), mathematical statistics (tests for randomness), and, last but not least, probabilistic combinatorics (discrete random structures, including random graphs, random sets, etc.)
