School Library Media Concentration

Program Overview:

The School Library Media Concentration (SLIB) prepares candidates to become certified as school library media specialists to serve in K-12 schools. The SLIB curriculum is aligned with the standards of the American Library Association, American Association of School Librarians, and the State of Tennessee licensure standards.

Who this Online M.Ed. program is for:

Students seeking admission to the Educational Media and Educational Technology Program must first meet the general requirements of the School of Graduate Studies and the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. If GPA is below a 3.0, the GRE is required. For students who took the Revised GRE (after August 1, 2011), equivalent scores will be used, based on Educational Testing Services' GRE Score Concordance. Obtaining a minimum of 2400 points based on the following formula:

  • Sum of the GRE aptitude score (V+Q+A)
  • GPA 500, and
  • The sum of (1) and (2)

Core Requirements:

  • EDFN 5010 - Interdisciplinary Seminar (1 credit, may be repeated for a total of 3 credits)
  • MEDA 5000 - History and Philosophy of Educational Media and Educational Technology (3 credits)
  • MEDA 5400 - Technology in Teaching and Learning (3 credits)
  • MEDA 5700 - Instructional Role of Educational Media and Educational Technology (3 credits)
  • MEDA 5950 - Research in Educational Media and Educational Technology (3 credits)

Total Core Requirements: 13 Credit Hours

  • MEDA 5628 - Children's Materials (3 credits)
  • MEDA 5635 - Basic Reference Materials (3 credits)
  • MEDA 5637 - Young Adult Materials (3 credits)
  • MEDA 5710 - School Library Media Program Development and Management (3 credits)
  • MEDA 5720 - Organization of Library Media (3 credits)
  • MEDA 5925 - Practicum in School Library Media (5 credits)
  • Guided Elective (3 credits)

Total Concentration Requirements: 23 Credit Hours
