Educational Opportunity Center
The Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) is a free TRIO program designed
to assist 1000 adults in obtaining a GED and/or with college or
vocational school enrollment. EOC staff assists participants with
determination of educational goals, academic assistance, completion of
college admission and financial aid applications, college adjustment
concerns and career exploration. The program is for anyone who does not
already have a four-year degree. The program can even continue to assist
students after they have begun college coursework. Participants must
reside in Carter, Unicoi, Hawkins, Sullivan, Johnson, Washington, or
Greene counties in Tennessee or in Scott or Washington counties in

Educational Talent Search
Educational Talent Search (ETS) is another TRIO program that helps middle
school and high school students prepare for and enter post-secondary
education. Talent Search provides career exploration and planning,
workshops and individual counseling sessions for financial aid,
scholarship information, ACT preparation, and college exploration. The
program also arranges college campus visits, educational and cultural
trips, and a majors fair for high school juniors. Talent Search works
with the 6th - 12th grades in Hawkins, Johnson and Sullivan counties.
TRIO

TRIO programs started with the Educational Opportunity Act of 1964 and
the Higher Education Act of 1965. All TRIO programs are funded by
the U.S. Department of Education. In 2007-2008 the ETSU EOC will receive
$226,600 and Educational Talent Search will receive $257,769 to serve
participants. ETSU has also committed money to each project - the EOC
receives $5,000 and Educational Talent Search receives $7,500.
