The mission of Operation Diabetes

is to increase awareness of diabetes and the role that pharmacists play in management and prevention of complications of diabetes. Student pharmacists conduct blood glucose screenings, among other services, to help identify those in the community at risk for diabetes and educate patients about the importance of medication adherence, glucose control, and living a healthy lifestyle.

 Mini-Bio:

Sara is a second year student pharmacist. She has served in leadership for the committee since beginning pharmacy school, first as the co-chair. She is involved in other APhA-ASP committees and activities as well as TSSP and Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. Her goals for the committee include enhancing student pharmacists' patient education skills, collaboration with other healthcare professionals, and serving the surrounding community. Outside of school Sara enjoys running, Braves baseball, and enjoying the outdoors.

Outreach Projects:

-ADA Step-Out Walk: We form a team with Phi Delta Chi Pharmaceutical Fraternity to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. We also attend the walk each year to conduct glucose checks and blood pressure screenings as well as educate about medication adherence.

-Education Classes: Each month student pharmacists teach classes along with the ETSU nutrition students about medications, nutrition, and other topics relating to diabetes management. These classes are held at the Johnson City Community Health Center.

-Diabetes Awareness Day: Each November we help at the Johnson City Mall with a week long event held by the MSHA Health Resource Center devoted specifically to diabetes care. This year, we focused on healthy holiday treats and passed out recipes and samples.
