The Roan Vision: Leadership Excellence.  Life-long Impact.

Our Mission: To fully develop each Scholar's leadership potential, and generate significant positive impact - on campus, in the region, and around the world.

To promote the quality of leadership necessary to carry our mountain region through, and beyond the 21st century, visionary Louis H. Gump, a longtime friend of ETSU, initiated the idea and helped to establish the Roan Scholars Leadership Program on the university campus.

The innovative program draws its inspiration from Roan Mountain, the highest peak in the area, a motivational sight and symbol of the strength, character, and idealism of the region’s people.

A four-year leadership curriculum including carefully selected real-world experiences offers development opportunities to students who show great potential in the areas of character, leadership, intellectual curiosity, and physical vigor. Mentors, community leaders, peers, and the program staff support students in developing their skill levels and confidence. By taking advantage of the opportunities and experiences, graduates who successfully complete the Roan Scholars Program will be prepared to become engaged leaders in their chosen fields, as well as their communities at large.
