Using Information Technology (UIT) Proficiency Requirement
Updated 5/15/2024
All students must demonstrate proficiency in information technology (basic computer skills) as a condition for graduating from ETSU.
Satisfying the UIT requirement
How to do this
ETSU's using information technology (UIT) proficiency requirement can be met in one of three ways:
- by successfully completing CSCI 1100 & CSCI 1150
- by transferring in a course from another accredited institution that has been determined to be equivalent to CSCI 1100
- by passing the UIT Proficiency Exam
When to do this
Our department recommends that students satisfy this requirement prior to accumulating 30 semester credit hours at ETSU.
The UIT Proficiency Exam
What it is
The UIT Proficiency Exam is provided as an alternative to taking CSCI 1100. It's intended for students who have already developed the skills that CSCI 1100 covers -- e.g., through job training, previous education, and/or experience.
What it entails
UIT is undergoing a transformative redesign to enhance the educational experience for all students. We are shifting our focus significantly—from traditional teaching tools to engaging with information technology topics crucial in today's digital landscape. This updated curriculum will cover essential areas such as Digital and Data Literacy, Cybersecurity and Privacy, Networking, Digital Content Creation and Management, Digital Citizenship, and the Application of AI in Problem Solving, along with emerging topics on the cutting edge of technology.
In line with these changes, the proficiency exam will also be updated. The Department of Computing is set to release an exam guide by the start of the Fall 2024 semester. Additionally, the schedule for the availability of the exam will be announced shortly thereafter.
What it costs
- There is no charge to take the proficiency exam in the campus testing center.
- Students who wish to attempt the remote administration of the test, will be assessed a $25 testing fee by ProctorU.
Testing Dates and Registration
You must register at least 36-60 hours before your desired testing date. Same day testing is NOT ALLOWED.

Who may take the exam
Students who are not excluded from taking the UIT proficiency exam may take the exam
ONCE. This includes students who have enrolled in CSCI 1100 but who have not yet started
an 1100 class.
- Students who pass this exam before the start of classes will have completed their UIT obligation; they may then drop CSCI 1100.
- Once classes start, these students become ineligible to take any exam to satisfy the UIT requirement and therefore they must then complete CSCI 1100.
Who may not take the exam or receive credit for taking and passing the CLEP exam
Students who may not take the exam or receive credit for taking the CLEP exam include the following:
- Students who have taken CSCI 1100.
- Students who are currently in the midst of taking CSCI 1100 -- i.e., who were enrolled in CSCI 1100 at any time when classes were meeting after the start of the current semester's classes.
- Students who have already taken and failed the UIT proficiency exam.
- Students who have already taken and failed the CLEP exam.
These students must complete CSCI 1100 to satisify the UIT requirement.
