Definition 

Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work performed in programming various systems for a computer; maintaining existing programs and performing related work as required. 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Develops programs for various systems, such as accounting, payrolls, etc.

Prepares flow charts and block diagrams for procedures.

Tests prepared programs on the computer.

Adjusts machine for processing information in varied forms.

Maintains existing programs.

Performs other work as assigned. 

Required Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of modern computer technology and programming.

Knowledge of practices, procedures and equipment used in computer operations.

Knowledge of business English and arithmetic.

Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.

Ability to express ideas clearly, concisely and convincingly.

Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees. 

Recommended Qualifications

Applicants possessing these qualifications have a good probability for success in this class. However, applicants not possessing these qualifications should apply if they believe their training and experience will enable them to perform the work successfully. Graduation from a standard high school. Completion of a course of study in computer science at a trade or technical school with some experience in computer programming desired.
