Entrepreneurs' Club speaker
JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 8, 2018) — The Entrepreneurs’ Club at East Tennessee State University will host Dr. Morgan Pattison on Monday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m. in Sam Wilson Hall, room 322.
Pattison is founder and operator of Solid State Lighting Services Inc., a consulting business focused on the technology of LEDs, OLEDs, and solid-state lighting. SSLS provides technical advice to the U.S. Department of Energy, corporations, investors, start-up companies and buyers of specialty lighting products. The business also develops products for clients, reviews LED lighting products and occasionally handles lighting design projects. Additionally, Pattison has founded several technology companies and is now embarking on a business that will provide lighting for horticultural applications.
During his talk, Pattison will give an overview of LED lighting technology and how it is revolutionizing the lighting industry, as well as a look at operating a small, focused consulting business.
Pattison attended the University of California, San Diego, where he earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree in electrical engineering, as well as a Ph.D. in materials science. His thesis advisor, Shuji Nakamura, won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014 for inventing the blue LED, the foundation for all LED lighting. Working with Nakamura prepared Morgan for a position as senior technical advisor to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solid State Lighting Program.
Pattison also has several patents to his credit, some of which have served as the base intellectual property for viable start-ups.
Pattison’s talk is open to the public. Directions to Sam Wilson Hall are available at www.etsu.edu/maps/. For additional information, contact Mitzi Brookshear at brookshe@etsu.edu or 423-439-7444. For disability accommodations, call the ETSU Office of Disability Services at 423-439-8346.
