JOHNSON CITY (March 26, 2018) – The 2018 Appalachian Student Research Forum at East Tennessee State University will take place Wednesday and Thursday, April 4-5, at the Millennium Centre.
Undergraduate and graduate students in many academic disciplines, as well as medical and pharmacy students, post-doctoral fellows and medical residents, will exhibit their research findings in 54 oral and 162 poster presentations. Although participants are primarily from ETSU, this annual event is open to students from all colleges and universities within the southern Appalachian region.
Oral presentations will be given on April 4 from noon-5 p.m., and posters will be presented and judged on April 5. Posters will be open to public viewing from 8 a.m.-noon on April 5.
The keynote speaker for this year’s forum is Dr. Shilpa Buch, whose address, “HIV and Drug Abuse go hand-in-HAND,” will be given on April 5 at 1 p.m. in the Millennium Centre auditorium.
Buch is a professor and executive vice chair for research and director of the Nebraska Center for Substance Abuse Research in the Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Neuroscience at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).

Buch, who holds a Ph.D. in microbiology from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda, India, has received numerous awards, including the 2016 UNMC Scientist Laureate Award, the 2016 Women in Neuroscience Award at the International Society of Neurovirology and other honors from various national and international societies. In addition, she held a leading role in the UNMC Women’s Mentoring Program from 2015-17.
