Bart Campolo Film
JOHNSON CITY (March 21, 2018) – A screening of the film “Leaving My Father’s Faith” featuring Bart and Tony Campolo will be held at East Tennessee State University on Thursday, March 29, at 7 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium.
This free public event will be followed by brief remarks and a question-and-answer session with Bart Campolo. It is sponsored by the Secular Humanist Alliance student organization as part of the 2018 Student Government Association Civility Series, “Step Into Civility.”
The film describes how, after one Thanksgiving dinner, Bart Campolo asked his father, well-known preacher Tony Campolo, to sit down and talk. Bart gave his father some shocking news: that after a lifetime of work as a prominent minister himself, he was no longer a believer in the Christian faith. It was the beginning of a candid, meaningful exchange between father and son about belief, storytelling and the power of relationships.
Bart Campolo is an author, speaker and the humanist chaplain at the University of Cincinnati. He is co-founder of Mission Year and a former urban minister who made news in 2014 when he announced that he no longer believes in God.
Tony Campolo is a sociologist, pastor, author and public speaker perhaps best-known for his role as spiritual advisor to former President Bill Clinton and as a prominent voice in the evangelical church. He is a leader of the Red-Letter Christian movement, which emphasizes the teachings of Jesus.
