Confederate monuments
JOHNSON CITY (March 21, 2018) – A multi-disciplinary panel discussion on Confederate monuments will be held at East Tennessee State University on Thursday, March 29, from 7-9 p.m. in the Rogers-Stout Hall auditorium (room 118).
Speakers will address the history of Confederate memorialization, as well as social, political and philosophical issues at stake in recent debates around the country regarding the presence of such monuments in the public square.
Four speakers from departments within ETSU’s College of Arts and Sciences are scheduled to present talks during this free public event, which will include a question-and-answer session. The speakers and the titles of their talks are:
- Dr. Tom Lee, associate professor, Department of History – “A Short History of Civil War Memorialization”;
- Dr. Paul Kamolnick, professor of sociology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology – “Contesting Southern Symbolism: Beyond the Either/Or of Hate or Heritage”;
- Dr. Jennifer Adler, adjunct faculty in the Department of Philosophy and Humanities and assistant director of the Roan Scholars Leadership Program – “Moving Memory: Comparative Approaches of Re-Remembering and Erasing Tragic History”; and
- Dr. Andrew Battista, associate professor and chair of the Department of Political Science, International Affairs and Public Administration – “Polarization and the Prospects for Reconciliation.”
This panel discussion is co-sponsored by the ETSU Department of Philosophy and Humanities, Students for Appalachian Studies and Socios, the Sociology Club.
