Wild and Scenic
JOHNSON CITY (March 20, 2018) – The Wild and Scenic Film Festival, an initiative of the South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL, pronounced “circle”), will make its fourth stop at East Tennessee State University on Friday, April 6.
Based in northern California and founded in 1983 to advocate for the protection of the South Yuba River, SYRCL has grown into an active advocacy group. SYRCL launched the Wild and Scenic Film Festival in 2002 as a fundraising and awareness event. Since then, it has grown into a global festival with events all over the world.
The Wild and Scenic Film Festival, which has been an annual fixture at ETSU since 2015, features short films dedicated to conservation of the natural world and the thrill of outdoor adventure.
The April 6 event is free and open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m. in the D.P. Culp University Center’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium. Select films from the globally touring slate of films have been curated for the festival at ETSU and will be shown alongside films from local student filmmakers.
Doors will open at 5 p.m., and guests are invited to come early to register for door prizes and browse the EnviroFair, which will feature a variety of local nonprofit and advocacy groups. Attendees will also have an opportunity to explore the EnviroFair and enjoy light refreshments during intermission.
This year’s ETSU sponsors are the Department of Sustainability, Buccaneer Outdoor Adventure and the Radio, Television and Film program in the Department of Media and Communication. It is hosted locally in support of the Friends of Rocky Fork State Park, a group dedicated to education about and advocacy for the newly established, 2,058-acre state park in Unicoi County.
