Women on Wednesdays
JOHNSON CITY (March 21, 2018) – Ceramics artist and food enthusiast Lindsay Rogers will present “Pottery, Food and the Labor of Making Objects” in the “Women on Wednesdays” lecture series at East Tennessee State University on March 28.
This free public talk is part of the ongoing 2017-18 lecture series sponsored by ETSU’s Women’s Studies Program and is planned in conjunction with Women’s History Month. It will begin at noon in the presentation room of the Multicultural Center on the second floor of the D.P. Culp University Center. A light lunch will be provided.
In her talk, Rogers will focus on her journey toward developing a comprehensive body of artwork, as well as how physical labor, collaboration and community engagement are interwoven in her career as both an artist and an educator.
“By embracing processes like digging my own clay, developing clay bodies or firing a wood kiln,” she states, “I enter into a continuous dialogue with the physical nature of the production of objects.”
Rogers is a ceramic artist and food enthusiast, as well as an assistant professor of ceramics in the Department of Art and Design at ETSU. She received her B.A. with a concentration in printmaking from Sarah Lawrence College in 2001 and an M.F.A. in ceramics from the University of Florida in 2013.
Over the years, Rogers has used her work as an artist to advocate for a more locally based and sustainable food system. She has collaborated with artists, chefs, food photographers and farmers. Her pottery and words can be found in a range of publications from books to blogs, magazines and podcasts.
The “Women on Wednesdays” series is designed to raise awareness about the research, scholarship and community engagement that women at ETSU are doing; to provide a venue where women on campus and in the community can discuss and support each other’s work; and to give students an opportunity to meet faculty who could become mentors for their studies.
