Small business award
JOHNSON CITY (June 1, 2018) – Joseph Powers, owner of Green Cube Solutions LLC and the 2018 Tennessee Small Business Person of the Year, was honored among other statewide award recipients during a special ceremony hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) in Washington D.C.
Powers utilized the free services available through the Tennessee Small Business Development Center (TSBDC) at East Tennessee State University’s Innovation Lab to start and grow his business. His consultant, Mark Bays, assistant director at TSBDC, nominated Powers for the award.
“Mr. Powers has put in the hard work and dedication needed to grow his business from the idea stage to what it is today. He has been an excellent client to work with and this honor is very well deserved. I am excited to see his growth and impact continue in the coming years.” Bays added.
Green Cube Solutions LLC provides roll-off dumpster and storage containers for rent and sale. The containers can also be customized for a variety of uses, from farm and residential storage to commercial platforms like job-site office space, tiny homes, construction and residential waste removal and recycling.
Powers, a Bristol native, graduated from Tennessee High School and earned a bachelor’s degree from ETSU in engineering technology. He founded Green Cube Solutions LLC on a rented lot with a 175-square-foot office trailer in January 2012. Two years later, he launched a hauling and transportation company with the use of a small roll-off dumpster program, and multiple over-the-road tractor-trailers. Green Cube Solutions has grown from one full-time employee, to 15 and recently moved into a newly constructed office and production space headquartered adjacent to the Tri-Cities Airport in Blountville. Powers has opened a second location in Knoxville.
He is the recipient of the 2016 Rising Star Award from the TSBDC, which he credits as a major contributor to the success of his business.
“When I initially inquired to the local TSBDC office in the fall of 2011, I really didn’t know what services they had to offer,” Powers said. “Once I started speaking with my representative, Mark Bays, I realized there was a wealth of knowledge to be obtained. The foundation and legwork that was completed with assistance from the TSBDC prior to launching helped to keep the company on track and provided a plan to grow from an initial start-up to where we are today.”
