Archaeology Awareness Month
JOHNSON CITY – The Gray Fossil Site and Hands On! Discovery Center will celebrate Tennessee Archaeology Awareness Month on Saturday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
The day will include a variety of activities and demonstrations for all ages. Local experts will demonstrate flint-knapping and pottery-making. East Tennessee State University scientists and students, as well as volunteers, will be on hand to discuss Tennessee archaeology and show artifacts throughout the day. Additional activities include drone demonstrations and spear-throwing.
“Secrets of the Nolichucky,” a recent documentary film by Nolpix Media, will be shown at 11 a.m. The film follows the excavation of the Cane Notch site, a prehistoric Cherokee village along the Nolichucky River in East Tennessee.
The Gray Fossil Site and Museum is located 1.8 miles off exit 13 on Interstate 26. Admission to the Hands On! Discovery Center is $10 for adults and children over 4, but Archaeology Day events are free to the public.
