'Women on Wednesdays'
JOHNSON CITY (Aug. 31, 2018) – “Trauma-Informed Dialogue: The Power of Coffee and Conversation to Change the World” is the topic of the first “Women on Wednesdays” lecture of the fall semester at East Tennessee State University on Sept. 5.
This free public talk in the lecture series sponsored by ETSU’s Women’s Studies Program will begin at noon in the Reece Museum.
In this talk, Dr. Meira Yasin will speak on her work in trauma-informed care around the world in such places as Palestine, Jordan and Greece. She will focus on the power of words and kindness to draw people together and affect change on a global scale.
Yasin has extensive training in trauma-informed care and psychiatric mental health. She has spent much of her career providing care to people in underserved areas locally and globally, focusing on global health and refugee health. Her other research interests include health-related quality of life and life stressors for refugees, adverse childhood experiences and health disparities for vulnerable populations.
Yasin, an assistant professor in undergraduate programs in the ETSU College of Nursing, earned her bachelor of science in nursing degree from ETSU in 2009 and her doctor of nursing practice degree with a family nurse practitioner concentration in 2016.
The “Women on Wednesdays” series is designed to raise awareness about the research, scholarship and community engagement conducted by women at ETSU; to provide a venue where women on campus and in the community can discuss and support each other’s work; and to give students an opportunity to meet faculty who could become mentors for their studies.
