ACL Fall Session
JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University’s Alliance for Continued Learning (ACL) will offer a wide range of classes and activities during the fall session, which runs from Sept. 18-Oct. 24.
The ACL is a member-powered, member-driven and member-governed learning opportunity. Participants decide the study groups, forums, classes and other activities to be held; identify leaders for the sessions; and elect officers.
To give new members an opportunity to become acquainted with the group, the ACL will welcome all participants at a continental breakfast Tuesday,Sept. 18, at 9:30 a.m., at Food City, 940 N. State of Franklin Road, in the upstairs meeting room; all classes throughout the season will be held at this location.
During that introductory session, Dr. Matthew Potterton, associate professor and chair of the ETSU Department of Music, will update the group on his department and on the progress of the university’s Performing Arts Center currently under construction. ETSU musical ensembles will provide entertainment.
Topics to be covered this fall include the evolution of galaxies, war and weapons in the nuclear age, the development of Satan in the Judeo-Christian tradition, civic literacy and the importance of the free press, optimal health for seniors, the history of Scotland, the operations of ETSU’s Center of Excellence for Sport Science, the Johnson City Police Department’s (JCPD) Community Crime Prevention Program, the Memphis Race Massacre of 1866, sex trafficking in East Tennessee, and the effect of voting rights legislation on American democracy.
Presenters include current and retired ETSU faculty members and guest speakers from Milligan College, the Johnson City Press, the JCPD and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
All ACL classes will be held Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m.-noon.
The ACL is sponsored by the ETSU Office of Professional Development, and no educational prerequisites, examinations or grades are involved. Registration allows participants to attend any or all sessions. Registration is $45 through Sept. 17 and $50 afterward.
