Bartleby partnership announcement
JOHNSON CITY (Dec. 17, 2018) – New opportunities are available to students working toward a coveted diploma seal upon graduation from Elizabethton High School as officials at East Tennessee State University signed an agreement Monday guaranteeing admission for Bartleby program participants and setting plans in motion to hold a high school leadership summit in 2019.
The partnership between Elizabethton High School, ETSU’s Office of Admissions in the Division of Enrollment Services and the Division of Student Affairs, will begin fall 2019 when Bartleby students can participate in dual enrollment and leadership development opportunities. The university will also offer additional dual enrollment scholarships for qualifying students.
In 2016, students at Elizabethton High School submitted a successful proposal to establish the Bartleby program and was named one of 18 XQ Super Schools in the country. A successful launch and additional grant funding has allowed the program to expand throughout the school system. Students who complete a set of requirements receive a special seal on their diplomas as a symbol of demonstrated excellence and preparedness for college.
“ETSU supports and shares the values of the Bartleby program and we are excited to offer opportunities for outstanding students on the pathway to success,” said Dr. Bert Bach, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at ETSU.
Elizabethton High School students dually enrolled at ETSU may also choose to participate in Buc Start, a predetermined set of course pathways that allow students to obtain up to 24 hours, or two semesters’ worth of college credit prior to entering college as a full-time student. There are over 12 pathway-focused course plans available to choose from such as digital media, health sciences and computing.
“Through this partnership we aim to help students successfully transition to college by starting their path toward a degree before they graduate high school,” added Dr. Ramona Williams, director of Admissions.
In an effort to align with the Bartleby program’s goal to build leadership skills to benefit students’ lives, their community and their futures, ETSU’s Division of Student Affairs will host a high school leadership summit for Bartleby students next year.
“One of ETSU’s core values is stewardship of place and the projects Bartleby students are undertaking fit perfectly with our mission, so it makes sense for us to add to those initiatives by connecting these bright students with engaging leaders,” said Dr. Joe Sherlin, vice president for Student Affairs.
