East Tennessee Epidemiologist Re-Elected to APHA Epidemiology Section Governing Council
Dr. Arsham Alamian, Assistant Professor in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at East Tennessee State University, has been re-elected to a two-year term as a Governing Councilor of the Epidemiology Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA). As Governing Councilor, Dr. Alamian is involved in reviewing and revising important APHA policies for their intellectual content. The policies put forth by members of the APHA will ultimately affect and improve the health of the nation. Further, as an active member of the Governing Council, Dr. Alamian participates in both distance and in-person meetings with the Epidemiology Section Council, Executive Board Members and President of the APHA to discuss and vote on influential policies, and select new members of the organization. As the only representative from the state of Tennessee and East Tennessee State University, Dr. Alamian is proud to be able to continue to serve as a Governing Councilor of the Epidemiology Section of the largest association of public health professionals in the world.
The Epidemiology Section of APHA fosters epidemiologic research and science-based public health practice and serves as a conduit between the epidemiologic research community and users of scientific information for the development, implementation and evaluation of policies affecting the public's health.
Dr. Alamians research focuses on the epidemiology of multiple behavioral risk factors for chronic disease, and clustering of risk factors for cardiovascular disease. He is leading a state-funded study on metabolic syndrome and is co-investigator on a 5 year inter-professional grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to address prescription drug abuse and misuse in Appalachia.
