MPH Student Makes Important Contribution to Illuminated Magazine
Each year, the School of Graduate Studies at East Tennessee State University publishes Illuminated, a magazine that presents research and creative projects that are currently happening on campus, and provides updates on alumni of ETSU graduate programs. Illuminated is the work of talented ETSU graduate students. The interviews were conducted and written by Sara Howard, a Master of Public Health student with a concentration in Epidemiology.
Writing for Illuminated afforded Sara the opportunity to practice her communication and teamwork skills. “In public health,” Sara stated, “professionals translate their expertise for the general population, which is essentially what I do with each article.” The overall creation of Illuminated also works similarly to public health with multiple people playing important roles in each article. “Every article is the product of collaboration with my editor, layout designer, graduate student, faculty advisor, and myself. All five us work to ensure the quality of each article and the total magazine.”
Sara Howard states, “Every aspect of creating the magazine from conducting interviews to editing articles presented a new and exhilarating challenge.” Her work with the magazine gave her a greater appreciation and understanding of disciplines other than public health. This issue of Illuminated features work by graduate students and their academic advisors from the following departments/offices: Library, Sociology, Elementary Education, Biomedical Sciences, and English.
