Dr. Khoury Named to Coalition for Better Health
Dr. Amal Khoury, Associate Dean for Quality and Planning for the East Tennessee College of Public Health and Professor and Chair of the College’s Department of Health Services Management and Policy, has been named to the Advisory Council of the Coalition for Better Health.
Launched in January 2020, the Coalition for Better Health represents the first statewide nonprofit aimed at encouraging improvements in public and institutional health policies. The Coalition will coordinate and lead efforts to improve health conditions in Tennessee through advocacy, research, and coordination among the public and private sectors. It brings together state and local leaders, major employers, and grassroots citizens who recognize that preventing behavior-related diseases is as important as treating them.
“I am excited for the opportunity to support a statewide organization focused on prevention and advocacy for policy change at both the public and institutional levels,” stated Dr. Khoury.
As a member of the Advisory Council, Dr. Khoury will help guide the strategic direction of the Coalition and provide feedback and expert opinion in developing, implementing and evaluating the course that the Coalition’s work will take. Council members represent business, education, science and medicine, public health, government relations, and other relevant areas. The Council will serve as a sounding board and think tank as the Coalition moves forward with its plan of action.
Tennessee has some of the highest rates of chronic and preventable health conditions in the United States, and therefore a significant opportunity for improving the health of its women, men and children. By changing public policy and the social environments in which people live, and by working with the private sector and with school systems to implement and expand wellness programs, the health trajectory of the state can change.
“To achieve meaningful improvements in the health of our state, we must work together, across the public and private sectors, to prioritize prevention and advance evidence-based policies and programs that support health for all Tennesseans,” continued Dr. Khoury. “The Coalition offers a path forward and a vision for change that I am happy to support.”
