Dr. Khoury Speaks at ETSU Foundation Annual Meeting

Dr. Amal Khoury, Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Services Management and Policy in the College of Public Health, was the invited speaker at the ‎ETSU Foundation Board of Directors and Annual Membership Meeting.

In her speech, Dr. Khoury offered a personal memoir intertwined with stories of her students and with the mission and purpose of our university.  She highlighted how family, friends and benefactors have impacted her and her students’ successes, while celebrating the role of hope, love and hard work in transforming lives and moving communities forward.   About the civil war that marked her childhood, she stated, “War was the norm outside our home, but inside, my parents maintained peace and love.  They taught my sister and I the value of hard-work and perseverance, not through their words, but through their actions.”   Throughout her remarks, she underscored the importance of giving and scholarships on her and her students’ education.

Dr. Khoury also highlighted, among others, a quote from an Master in Public Health student, ”There are many universities that accept students, but very few universities that meet students on their journey, understand their individual needs, and help them accomplish their goals.”  She demonstrated through students’ experiences how ETSU “transforms the lives not only of the people of our region, not only of the people of our nation, but also of the people of our world.”  In addition to her role as Department Chair, Dr. Khoury serves as Associate Dean for Quality and Planning in the College of Public Health.  Other significant roles include Chair of the College Accreditation Committee, Chair of ASPPH’s (Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health) Health Policy and Management Forum, and past Chair of the Women, Gender and Health Interest Group for AcademyHealth.  More information about Dr. Khoury can be found by viewing her faculty page and by reading her profile featured on the ETSU home page.
