Dr. Mamudu Receives 2016 College-based Leadership Award at APHA

Dr. Hadii Mamudu, Associate Professor in the Department of Health Services Management and Policy in the College of Public Health, recently received College-Based Leadership Award, a national award given by the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Section of American Public Health Association (APHA) during the annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.  Dr. Mamudu directs the Tobacco Policy Research Program at East Tennessee State University.

Criteria for this award include outstanding effort in a college-based campaign to reduce alcohol, tobacco or other drug use among college-age students. Dr. Mamudu was recognized for his research on tobacco control, which has had impact on policy/program and advocacy initiatives in Tennessee and around the world, as well as his service to APHA and the public health profession.   

As Dr. Mamudu noted in his acceptance speech, “Conducting tobacco control research in a tough policy environment is challenging, but also highly exciting.”  He added, “Countless people at the university and in the community have supported my work and made it possible, particularly my Head of Department (Dr. Khoury), Dean of College of Public Health (Dr. Wykoff), and ETSU Chief Operation Officer (Dr. Bishop).”

The goals of the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Section of APHA are to develop, foster and advocate for sound research, policy and practice in the fields of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs epidemiology, prevention and treatment as well as to enhance communication concerning Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs issues among the Section members and the Section leadership, APHA members and the wider community.
