Environmental Health Student Selected for National Internship
Reem Tariq, Master of Science in Environmental Health student in the East Tennessee State University College of Public Health, has been selected for the National Environmental Public Health Internship Program (NEPHIP) for the class of 2017.
Ms. Tariq will be awarded a stipend to complete a ten week internship at the Benton County Health Services in Corvallis, Oregon. Benton County Environmental Health has been sponsoring interns for over 15 years.
"I am honored and grateful to be selected to serve as an intern for the National Environmental Public Health Internship Program,” stated Ms. Tariq. “Now more than ever, we need more voices of reason grounded in ethics and practicality to acknowledge the possible harmful effects our policies can have on the health of the nation.”
The National Environmental Health Association administers the National Environmental Public Health Internship Program with funding from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Environmental Health Services Branch. The purpose of the program is to encourage environmental health students to consider careers at local, state, or tribal environmental public health departments following graduation.
Ms. Tariq will be working on two projects: one project focuses on GIS mapping for potential mosquito breeding sites and the other will evaluate the existing food manager certification program at the health department.
She concluded, “My education here at ETSU has helped me realize how important it is to continue fighting the good fight. I am excited to finally apply what I have learned in classrooms, out there in the real world. "
