Dean Wykoff Provides Annual Update on Tennessee's Health Status
Dean Randy Wykoff was invited to testify before the Senate Health and Welfare Committee regarding the health of Tennessee citizens. This is the seventh year that the Committee has invited Dr. Wykoff to appear at the beginning of the legislative session, and provide an update on the health status of the State. Wykoff said Tennessee ranks 42nd in overall health according to the United Health Foundation, up from 44th last year. He noted this is a positive trend from when Tennessee was ranked 49th in 2005.
Dr. Wykoff linked economic development and education to health outcomes among Tennesseans, discussing the life expectancy gap between wealthy and poorer counties. He also mentioned that unhealthy behaviors lead to health outcomes like diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. Tennessee ranks 47th in smoking, 35th in obesity, 40th in physical inactivity, and 38th in drug deaths.
“Pick a small number of high-impact health challenges,” recommended Dr. Wykoff. “And dedicate significant, state-wide efforts to implementing evidence-based interventions over a minimum of five years.” Other recommendations to improve the state’s health include assuring access to healthcare and a plan to enhance economic development and educational achievement, especially in Tennessee's poorest and most rural counties.
The Committee is chaired by Senator Rusty Crowe, who has served in the Senate for over 25 years, representing District 3 - Washington, Unicoi and Carter Counties. He has frequently been recognized as the legislator of the year by various organizations and agencies.
