The ETSU Medical Library will be hosting the National Library of Medicine traveling exhibition “From DNA to Beer:  Harnessing Nature in Medicine and Industry” from June 8 through July 3, 2018, with several corresponding events. This exhibit was produced by the National Library of Medicine and the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History and illustrates the dynamic relationship among microbes, medicine, technology, and industry.

We are proud to be able to provide this exhibit to the community as selection of host sites is a competitive nation-wide process. We're also pleased to be able to offer a series of events in partnership with local experts and a growing local industry.  We have several activities planned including talks at local craft breweries on the science of brewing, a bread making demonstration, and a movie lunch in the library.

Events include:

  • 6/7/18, 6:30 PM: Johnson City Brewing Company tour/talk
  • 6/13/18, 1 PM: Bread Baking Demo with Elizabeth Renfro from the Washington County UT Extension Office. Please RSVP to Nakia Woodward at woodwardn@etsu.edu – confirmed attendees will leave with bread starter for making your own bread.
  • 6/14/18, 6:30 PM: Great Oak Brewing tour/talk
  • 6/20/18, 12 PM: Movie & Pizza at the Medical Library: Join us downstairs for a viewing of the PBS documentary “The American Brew: The Rich & Surprising History of Beer”
  • 6/21/18, 6:30 PM: JRH Brewing tour/talk
  • 6/28/18, 6:30 PM: Yee Haw Brewing tour/talk

Throughout the month, traveling exhibit panels from NLM will be on display in the medical library lobby. Topics addressed include fermentation, recombinant DNA techniques, penicillin, the development of a serum to combat diptheria, and other issues in microbiology and biochemistry.

Please note that for the events at local craft brewers, attendees must be at least 21 years of age and have valid ID. Events are also being posted to our Facebook page
