New Listening Room Donated by Quillen Alumni
Thanks to a generous donation from four Quillen Class of 2019 students, the Medical
Library is excited to announce the addition of a listening room featuring vinyl records
and space to relax. Located in room 106, the room features a record player, a collection
of albums, a comfy chair, and a dedication plaque from the students. Over time we
plan to add more albums, wall art, plants, and other items that will help make the
room a relaxing and inviting space. This donation helps further our goals to be a
source of knowledge but also of stress relief and relaxation for all of our students,
complementing our other services like yoga mat checkout and an exercise room. If you
have requests or suggestions, please let us know.
The starter collection includes the following albums:
- Beck, Sea Change
- The Flaming Lips, Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
- My Morning Jacket, It Still Moves
- Radiohead, In Rainbows
The room is available to all users of the Medical Library during the library's staffed hours, currently 8am to midnight on weekdays, 10am to midnight on Saturdays, and 1pm to
midnight on Sundays. Headphones can be borrowed from staff at the library's front
desk. Students are also welcome to take a break in the room to listen to music on
their own devices and earbuds.
We're very grateful to the students for this great idea and generous donation. If
you would like to donate albums or other items for the room, please see a library
staff member.
The dedication sign in the room explains the student's goals for the donation and the history of the project:
This turntable and vinyl record collection is dedicated to the students at ETSU College
of Medicine. We present this with the hope of encouraging self-care, music listening,
and experiencing music through the slower, thematic medium of vinyl: where one can
touch the album artwork, see the grooves in a moving record, and experience this unique
form of listening experience. We encourage you to slow down, release stress, heal
through music, and reach out if you ever need help.
We are four students from the class of 2019 who formed a band called Circadia and performed a fundraiser concert at The Willow Tree during the Keystone experience
prior to graduation. The themes of that course include self-care, reflection, and
connectedness. Our set list for the concert was inspired by these core themes, and
each album of the original vinyl collection contains one song which we performed during
the concert.
Headphones are available for checkout at the medical library front desk. A multi-input
headphone amplifier is provided for group listening experiences. Additional donations
to the record collection are encouraged. We would like to thank ETSU College of Medicine
Medical Library staff, including Dr. Wallace. We also thank Dr. Theresa Lura our Keystone
course director, Dr. Joseph Florence and colleagues, and most importantly our friends,
and the students who come after us for your service and for carrying the fire. Remember
to take care of yourselves.
The band consists of the following members of the class of 2019:
Clay Blanchett
David Wilhoite
