ETSU pharmacy student awarded prestigious summer internship at Johns Hopkins

JOHNSON CITY A student in the Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University has been awarded a prestigious summer internship at Johns Hopkins University.

Shannon Parkey, a second-year pharmacy student at ETSU, will spend the summer taking part in the Johns Hopkins Pharmacy Internship Program through which she will work at the Johns Hopkins Weinberg Outpatient Pharmacy in Baltimore.

The pharmacy, located in The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, services approximately 140 acute care beds and two high-volume outpatient oncology infusion centers.

The acute care patient areas include surgery, medical oncology, benign hematology, hematologic malignancies and bone marrow transplantation. The primary outpatient infusion center cares for approximately 150-200 patients per day with a variety of malignancies. And the inpatient/outpatient infusion center cares for 50 patients undergoing bone marrow transplants. Additionally, the Oncology Investigational Drug Service supports 400-500 trials within the various practice settings.

The internship program is structured to provide experiences that supplement formal academic training. On average, only 20 students are hired each year for the internship program.

I am so excited to see what experiences await me this summer through this internship. I am completely humbled that I am able to have this experience. It is really a once in a lifetime opportunity, said Parkey, an Erwin native. I cant thank the school enough for helping me and encouraging me to apply for this internship. I have an interest in pursuing a residency upon graduation, and this internship will give me more insight and hands-on work with the clinical pharmacy setting.
