Gatton Students participate at annual Health Fair Day

I had the idea to get more involved with our local senior center when I was at Annual this year. Even though it was in the summer, I knew that we could pull together and have a really great impact! Sun safety has been a passion of mine stemming from my undergraduate education, so this was the perfect event in which I could get involved. - Shannon Parkey, ETSU Gatton College of Pharmacy APhA-ASP second-year student pharmacist

This sun safety and skin cancer prevention event was held as part of Health Fair Day at the Johnson City Seniors Center, where participants learned about blood pressure, exercise, and how to stay safe in the sun this summer! Loren Kirk, a final-year student pharmacist, and Shannon Parkey presented material and distributed pamphlets gathered from the local American Cancer Society (ACS) office to over 60 senior participants. The ACS has great patient-friendly information on checking moles and other suspicious areas for the seniors as well as their Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap campaign, which reminds patients to slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses to protect eyes.
