Gatton ranks among top in Southeast

JOHNSON CITY (April 7, 2022) – East Tennessee State University Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy is listed among the “Best Pharmacy Schools” by U.S. News & World Report, ranked in 2020.

Gatton College of Pharmacy, the nation’s only private college within a public university, is ranked No. 71 out of 134 schools, which makes it:

    • among the top five private pharmacy schools in the Southeast (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee).
    • among the top 10 public pharmacy schools in the Southeast.
    • among the top five pharmacy programs founded after 2005 in the U.S.
    • second best private program founded after 2005 in the U.S.
    • Gatton outranks 22 pharmacy programs founded before 2005.

The college was unranked until 2016, when it leapt ahead of 53 other schools to place 74 on the list. In 2020, the Gatton College of Pharmacy moved up to 71.

“I’m so impressed that our service-oriented college has become nationally recognized so quickly since its founding in 2005,” said Dean Debbie Byrd.  “There are many factors I believe have influenced our ranking, but I am very proud of our caring faculty, award-winning student organizations, tight-knit community, and our college’s service to the rural and underserved in the region. Our 95% alumni satisfaction rate, compared to 81.8% (avg) of all pharmacy schools, also shows that we’re meeting the needs of our student pharmacists while they’re here.”

Recently in March, the college earned a top national award for service to the community, The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) awarded ETSU the Lawrence C. Weaver Transformative Community Service Award.

The college’s student organizations have won numerous national awards for service, including a recent national honor for educating the community about prescription drug misuse.

The U.S. News Best Health Schools rankings are based solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline. Respondents rated the academic quality of programs on a scale of 1 (marginal) to 5 (outstanding). They were instructed to select "don't know" if they did not have enough knowledge to rate a program. Only fully accredited programs in good standing during the survey period are ranked. Schools with the highest average scores appear in the rankings sorted in descending order based on their average peer assessment score.

For disciplines with rankings calculated and published in 2020, U.S. News conducted surveys in fall 2019 and early 2020. Those surveyed included 134 schools and programs offering Doctor of Pharmacy degrees accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (62%).
