CPT Smith received his commission from the accelerated OCS program in December 2008. CPT Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree in History from Excelsior College.

Prior to commissioning CPT Smith served 16 years as an enlisted Soldier. CPT Smith served in numerous enlisted positions both M-Day and in the AGR (Active Guard and Reserve) program, with his highest enlisted duty position being the HHC, 176th CSSB 1SG. His officer assignments include Commander of DET1, 730th Quarter Master Company, Battalion Equipment Readiness Officer, and 176th CSSB S3 Operations and Training Officer.
CPT Smith has deployed twice for Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2005 he deployed with the 278BCT as a Cavalry Scout to FOB Bernstein, Iraq, where he served as Commander of the Relief in charge of base security and performed duties as the Squadron Retention NCO and then eventually was assigned to a Military Transition Team (MiTT) training the 109th Iraqi Infantry in tactics. In 2007, CPT Smith deployed with the 176th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion to Camp Buhering, Kuwait where he served as a Contracting Officer Representative over seeing numerous government contracts for the Bases along the Kuwait/Iraq border. During 2010, CPT Smith deployed the 730th Quarter Master Company to Nashville in Support of Operation May Torrent by supplying bottled water for the flood victims.

CPT Smith’s military education includes the Ordnance Captains Career Course where he graduated honor graduate, Ordnance Basic Officer Leadership Course, Training Officer Course, Unit Status Reporting Course, Advanced Non Commissioned Officer Course, Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Physical Security Managers Course, Contracting Officer Representative Course, Air Assault Course, Operations Security Manager Course and Army Combatives Course.

His awards include the Combat Action Badge, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Ribbon, Overseas Component Training Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Mobilization, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, and the following Tennessee Army National Guard awards, Recruiting Merit Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation, Individual Achievement Ribbon, War Service Ribbon, Louisiana Emergency Service Medal, Commendation Ribbon and several other awards..
