Constance Hixson, MD, Assistant Professor/Kingsport Center



Dr. Hixson states that it has been her great pleasure since 1992 to be on the East Tennessee State University Faculty in the Department of Family Medicine. She loves working with the Residents as they develop into responsive, knowledgeable, skilled, caring physicians. Dr. Hixson encourages and supports professional development and individual fulfillment in those around her.  Dr. Hixson holds a part-time position as a Clinical Instructor at ETSU Family Physicians of Kingsport. In her childhood and adulthood, she have enjoyed many multicultural experiences, including working as a teacher for four years in West and East Africa prior to entering medical school.  While a lab instructor at Muhimbili Hospital, University of Dar es Salaam College of Medicine, Tanzania, Dr. Hixson realized that she should seek medical training. She graduated from the University of Utah College of Medicine with Honors in Family Medicine, completed Family Medicine Residency at Duke University School of Medicine, worked in a farming community as a family physician for six years, and since 1988 have been a teacher in family medicine.  After several years in Lexington, Kentucky, Dr. Hixson and her family moved to Kingsport, Tennessee. Dr. Hixson and her husband, a cardiologist, have raised four children among the welcoming people and beautiful mountains of East Tennessee. Dr. Hixson is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, a member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Hixson is an Instructor in ETSU's Communication Skills for Health Professionals multidisciplinary course. Recently, she provides leadership as the Co-Director of the International Medical Graduate Institute at ETSU, a skills assessment program for international medical graduates.
