Why Quillen
Doing my undergraduate education at ETSU, Quillen faculty and staff were always very open, present, and helpful anytime I needed help or had any questions about subjects like the admission process or the MCAT. When a group of friends and I started a new club with a focus on local health impacts and education, the faculty at Quillen did everything they could to assist us in the process. Additionally, Quillen has a focus on the region I grew up in, and to attend a medical school that champions the values I hold for my community was a huge deciding factor. A personal story that I believe offers a view into the very personal feeling that Quillen offers is that before I had even applied, I had the opportunity to speak with the Dean of Student Affairs. He did not even know that I planned on applying or was pre-med at all, yet we had a great casual conversation about growing up in athletics and how fun and beneficial it is. That short interaction left an impact on me that I feel that at Quillen the feel of being part of a family is real.

Being a Quillen Student
A few things in medical schools are constants: classes will be difficult, you will have to study a lot, and you will learn more than you ever thought possible in a very short amount of time. The parts of school apart from this are what sets Quillen apart in my eyes. A great perk is that Quillen's low student-to-faculty ratio means that you can get assistance or attention any time you need it. Being a student here also gives you the opportunity to get involved in the clinics as early as your first semester and be exposed to practices you have certain interests in.

Life Outside of The Classroom
Here in Johnson City, I always considered it to be in a great location. With the mountains so close and the growing downtown district, you can really get into any activity you want. The parks, mountains, rivers, and lakes are great for outdoor fun; while in town, there are great restaurants and places to go and see. A personal favorite is a track close to my apartment that lets me get outside for midday walks. If you're looking to travel on the weekends, we are in a great spot for that too, with cities like Asheville, Gatlinburg, and Knoxville all in close proximity.

Prior Life
After graduating in 2015, I took a gap year. During that time, I continued to work as a CNA and went through the application cycle. During my undergrad years, I worked, volunteered, shadowed, and played a lot of intramural sports - basketball and ultimate frisbee specifically.

Words of Wisdom
Take time to stop and smell the roses. Medical school and the path to get there is a long and challenging one. Make sure you appreciate all the work you have done to be where you are and maintain faith in your ability till the end of your journey.
