Looking back, I can’t imagine going to medical school anywhere besides Quillen. From your first steps onto this campus, you will understand why people fall in love with this school at first sight. It’s located in one of the most beautiful areas in the country, its small class size promotes strong relationships between classmates and faculty, and the curriculum is proven to challenge and mold students into becoming bright and compassionate physicians. It’s incredibly difficult to find this combination anywhere else, and I consider myself extremely blessed to be a part of the Quillen family.
Juggling School and Family
I got married exactly one month before starting orientation for Quillen. Even though medical school and marriage both have pretty steep learning curves, it is absolutely possible to succeed with both. My best advice is to figure out a consistent schedule that allows you to spend as much time as possible with your spouse. For me, that looked like trying to work diligently most days until late afternoon so that I could put up the books and spend the evening hours with my wife. Also, don’t forget to go out on date nights and occasionally find time to explore the surrounding area together to help relieve some stress!
Life Outside the Classroom
There is always time for a study break, and the great thing about Johnson City is that the options are endless. We are located within 15 minutes from some incredible hiking trails, there are great golf courses nearby, intramural sports, awesome local restaurants, and also some really cool cities like Asheville, NC, that are not too far away. If you’re looking for a local church to get plugged into, there are also plenty of options to check out.
Before Quillen, I was a collegiate athlete at UT-Martin. I played on the golf team all four years and even found time to earn a degree while I was there, too. I was involved with many on-campus organizations as well as giving back to the local community with different fundraisers and service projects. I loved my time in Martin (I even met my wife there), but I am thankful to be back on the east side of the state!
Words of Wisdom
Never lose sight of your goals. If you’re reading this, it’s most likely because you want to be a physician one day. That’s awesome! Things may get challenging and difficult from time to time, but don’t let that alone make you think you can’t achieve your dream of taking care of patients one day. If it’s something that you really want, work as hard as you can everyday to make it a reality. Surround yourself with an awesome support system and never give up on yourself. You wouldn’t have made it this far if you weren’t completely capable!
