Orthotics and Prosthetics
Welcome to the Master of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics Program (MSOP) at East Tennessee State University!
The Department of Rehabilitative Sciences is developing an Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) program that will offer an entry-level Master of Science in Orthotics and Prosthetics (MSOP) degree. We anticipate our first cohort of studenst will start in May of 2023. The new program will be housed on the medical school campus (known as the VA Mountain Home Campus), located adjacent to ETSU’s main campus. The O&P program will be located on the first floor of building 2. Building 2 will also house the Physical Therapy (PT) and new Occupational Therapy (OT) programs.
This will make ETSU’s O&P program one of only a few in the country that is housed on a medical school campus and shares space and curricula with PT and OT. Construction of the new facilities is expected to be completed April 2022. Click here to follow the progress on the design and renovations.
The advantage of O&P, PT, OT sharing a building and some curricula enables students to gain a wider perspective of patient care from the lens of multiple healthcare disciplines. Research shows this type of environment provides “value added” preparation for graduates to deliver effective healthcare. The benefits of a small class size (anticipate ~ 14 students per cohort) in the O&P program allows greater access to faculty and labs which are critical to learning the intricacies of O&P theory, design, engineering, principles of patient assessment and the translation of knowledge and skills into an effective evidence-based treatment plan for clinical care.
