JOHNSON CITY – (February 14, 2020) The great Sophocles tragedy “Antigone” will open the spring semester season in the Department of Theatre and Dance at East Tennessee State University. Performances will be at the Bud Frank Theatre Thursday-Saturday, Feb. 20-22, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m.
As the show opens, the two sons of Oedipus – Eteokles and Polyneikes – have been fighting for the kingship of Thebes. Both men die in the battle. Their successor, Kreon, decides that King Eteokles will be buried, but Polyneikes, because he was leading a foreign army, will be left on the field of battle. Defying Kreon’s order, Antigone, his sister, buries him anyway but is caught.
