JOHNSON CITY (Feb. 25, 2020) – Four student organizations at East Tennessee State University are collaborating to host “Carnival for a Cause” to benefit Crumley House, a local nonprofit brain injury rehabilitation center. This event kicks off Brain Injury Awareness Month.
The ETSU Honors College Student Council (HCSC), Allied Health Student Association (AHSA), Physical Therapy Club (PT Club) and American Medical Student Association (AMSA) collaborated on the fundraiser, which will be held Saturday, March 7, from 1-4 p.m. at the field adjacent to ETSU’s Wayne G. Basler Center for Physical Activity (CPA). In the case of inclement weather, the carnival will be moved indoors to the ETSU CPA basketball courts.
Tickets valued at $1 or $5 will be available to purchase at the event, and all proceeds generated from ticket sales will directly benefit Crumley House. Some highlights include food, face painting, “pie a professor,” a corn hole tournament, and the opportunity to win prizes such as gift cards and gift baskets.
This family-friendly carnival, which is open to the entire community, will help provide awareness of traumatic brain injuries and raise support for Crumley House, whose mission is to restore the functions of traumatic brain injury survivors to pre-injury levels through physical, cognitive and computer training.
“Crumley House’s dedication to supporting brain injury survivors and their families, as well as educating students and community members about the impact of traumatic brain injuries, is very near to the hearts of many of our students,” said Kristen Bennett, a student organizer and AHSA and HCSC member. “Through hosting this carnival, we hope to generate a unified wave of support for Crumley House and assist them in continuing their mission of restoring the functions of traumatic brain injury survivors in our region to pre-injury levels.”
Crumley House impacts the lives of countless families in the Appalachian Highlands, including those of ETSU students and faculty, through providing rehabilitative services for traumatic brain injury survivors. Additionally, Crumley House helps to further the education of ETSU students, as evident through the numerous volunteer, observation and employment opportunities it provides for ETSU students and alumni.
“For example, the partnership between Crumley House and various ETSU programs, such as the graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology, allows ETSU students to further their education through providing services to these patients,” Bennett said.
Carnival for a Cause is sponsored by ETSU SGA/BUC Fund, the College of Clinical and Rehabilitative Health Sciences (CCRHS) and the Honors College.
“We certainly want to thank our friends and the various organizations at ETSU for hosting this event and more importantly, donating the proceeds to the Crumley House,” said Guynn Edwards, executive director of the Crumley House.
