JOHNSON CITY (UPDATED April 20, 2020) – World-renowned paleoartist Mauricio Antón will discuss his work in a free public virtual lecture on Tuesday, April 21.
“First-Hand Study of Extant Animals as a Reference for Natural History Reconstructions: From Dissection to Wildlife Observation” will begin at 7 p.m. and may be accessed via Zoom. The previously published Zoom access information has changed. To access the lecture, go to zoom.com and join the webinar by using meeting ID 963 2470 9325. The lecture is sponsored by East Tennessee State University’s Center of Excellence in Paleontology, Department of Geosciences and Department of Art and Design.
In his talk, Antón will share how he studies modern-day animals – from their skin and bones to their behavior in the wild – to help him bring long-extinct species back to life through his artwork.
For over three decades, Antón has specialized in the scientific reconstruction of extinct life and is well-known for his influential paintings of early humans, extinct carnivores and other vertebrate fossil groups. He is also one of the world’s foremost experts on saber-toothed cats.
Antón is in residence at ETSU this spring as the chairholder of the Wayne G. Basler Chair of Excellence for the Integration of the Arts, Rhetoric and Science in the university’s College of Arts and Sciences.
