JOHNSON CITY (Aug. 21, 2020) – It will certainly look different this year than in years past, but in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic, East Tennessee State University’s traditional Welcome Week will still provide new and returning students with opportunities to enjoy entertainment, engage with fellow students, learn about campus services and student organizations, and win prizes.
Over a two-week period – from Aug. 24-Sept. 3 – students may take part in a variety of virtual and self-guided events.
Highlights of the week include a drive-in movie, a virtual trivia event, and a virtual major concert.
Buctainment will host a showing of “Grease” for students and ETSU employees on Friday, Sept. 4*, at 8 p.m. in parking lot 21 near Warf-Pickel Hall. The parking lot will open at 7:30 p.m. ETSU ID will be required upon entry, and those attending must comply with the university’s COVID-19 guidelines. (*NOTE: This is rescheduled from the original date of Aug. 28 due to anticipated inclement weather from Hurricane Laura.)
The X Ambassadors, an American rock band from Ithaca, New York, will perform in the free virtual Welcome Week Concert sponsored by the Student Government Association on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 8 p.m. The concert is open to all students, faculty and staff, and an ETSU Zoom account and registration via the SGA Concerts web page (etsu.edu/concerts) are required for participation.
The Virtual Trivia Gameshow – the first in a series of trivia nights to take place throughout the fall semester – will take place Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. via Twitch. Trivia questions will come from such categories as sports, ETSU, entertainment and more. A Twitch account and registration are required.
In addition, a Virtual Involvement Fair will allow students to explore registered student organizations by interest, interact with student leaders in real time using a digital meeting link, and request to join organizations. Attendees will be eligible to win such prizes as tablets, headphones and more.
A different type of organization will be featured each evening Monday-Thursday, Aug. 24-27 and Aug. 31-Sept. 3. Between 4-6 p.m. each day, students can visit the digital meeting links of groups in which they are interested to learn more from the student leaders of the organizations and request to join.
Students may visit the Welcome Week web page at etsu.edu/welcomeweek for a complete schedule and links to Virtual Trivia Gameshow registration and the organizations participating in the Virtual Involvement Fair.
