JOHNSON CITY – (April 20, 2021) Two current East Tennessee State University students and a rising freshman signed today as team captains for the three esports varsity teams for the 2021-2022 season.
Ashe Greenberg, who was the founding captain for the Overwatch® team during its inaugural season, signed today as captain for the team’s second year. Greenberg, of Oak Ridge, is a senior biology major and plans to graduate from ETSU in May 2022. As captain, she led the team to an 8-1 finish during the regular season and to the final 16 in the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) playoffs.
Lucca Weber, who also signed today, will return for a second season as captain of the League of Legends® team. The students spent fall 2020 in pre-tournament gaming and began their official season this past January. The Greeneville resident is majoring in biology.
During the news conference, Esports Head Coach Jeff Shell announced that Tyler Gregory will be the founding captain of the new Rocket League® team that begins this fall. The Greenville, South Carolina, resident is a senior at J.L. Mann High School, where he is a former member of the football team. Within the Rocket League® arena, Gregory is listed in the Supersonic Legend, which is the highest competitive rank a gamer can achieve in Rocket League®.
Shell added that recruitment for the Rocket League® team continues and that competition will begin this fall.
