JOHNSON CITY – (April 19, 2021) Students beginning the Master of Education in Reading program this fall at East Tennessee State University can now complete the program and also earn a PreK-12 Reading Specialist Endorsement as well as an additional endorsement in PreK-12 English as a Second Language or a license for Special Education Interventionist K-8, 6-12 – all without having to take any additional courses.
The two-year program is 100% online and is available for practicing teachers as well as recent graduates.
“This is an opportunity for our teachers to be more competitive in the marketplace and to gain a broader understanding about how to address the needs of readers,” said Dr. Karin Keith, who is chair of Curriculum and Instruction in the Clemmer College. “For example, special education instruction is needed everywhere, and having specialized reading training is very valuable and allows teachers to dig deeper into understanding the needs of students. Graduates can also be a literary coach or teach reading intervention.”
She added that teachers with expertise in ESL instruction are also in demand.
“This additional endorsement with ESL also helps teachers better understand if the reason some students are struggling is the result of language, or if it is another learning problem.”
Keith said applications for the graduate program in reading are still being accepted. To learn more, visit www.etsu.edu/coe/cuai or contact Keith at keithkj@etsu.edu.
