JOHNSON CITY – (September 7, 2021) Two of East Tennessee State University’s Esports teams begin their fall competition seasons today.
“Last year was a year of firsts,” ETSU Head Coach Jeff Shell reported during today’s
Media Day. “Our first media day, our first recruitment season, our first games, our
first jerseys, our first tournament, our first team captains…it was an incredible
first year!”
The school’s Overwatch® team begins its second season after finishing in the top 16 of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) playoffs. This past spring, the Overwatch® varsity and junior varsity teams competed in the NECC conference and made it to the playoffs, earning a top 8 finish in their division.
Ashe Greenberg will serve as team captain for Overwatch® for the second year. She is a senior biology major and plans to graduate from ETSU in May 2022.
Shell added that this fall will also be a year of firsts for the Rocket League® team which was announced earlier this year. Leading the Rocket League® team is Tyler Gregory, a freshman from Greenville, South Carolina, who is listed in the Supersonic Legend, the highest competitive rank a gamer can achieve in Rocket League®.
During the Media Day announcements, Shell also introduced the four students – Chris
Moser, Colleen Sharkey, Levi Everroad and Spencer Jedrzejk – who will serve as the
official casters for the Overwatch® and Rocket League® games.
ETSU’s League of Legends® team will begin its second competition season in January 2022.
ETSU’s Esports games will be broadcast starting tonight on Twitch.TV/ETSUesports. Rocket League® kicks off its season at 7:30 p.m. against University of Southern Mississippi. Overwatch® will play Virginia Wesleyan University at 9 p.m.
