JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 28, 2021) – Dr. Stacey Williams of the East Tennessee State University Department of Psychology will share “The Untold Stories of Gender-Diverse Individuals with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome” in a free virtual talk on Wednesday, Oct. 6.
Her talk, which will be given via Zoom (https://etsu.zoom.us/j/91534258461), is part of the “WGS on Wednesdays” series sponsored by the Women’s, Gender and
Sexuality Studies Program at ETSU.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders among women, and the psychological and social experiences of cisgender women are well-known. However, Williams notes that nonbinary, genderqueer, gender-fluid and transgender individuals are not equally represented in literature or addressed by health care providers. Her talk will highlight the hidden experiences and needs of these individuals living with PCOS.
Williams is a social psychologist studying stigma and health among sexual and gender-diverse populations. She is a professor of psychology and director of the Social Issues and Relations Laboratory at ETSU. In addition to teaching, she is the chair of the university’s Institutional Review Board and serves as a mentor to graduate students studying psychology.
Williams earned her Ph.D. in psychology from Kent State University and completed a National Institute of Mental Health-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan.
Carrying on the legacy of the “Women on Wednesdays” talks that began in 2012, this series highlights work at ETSU that centers on gender and sexuality.
